Dubbo's Fallen WW1 Soldiers

As part of the commemoration of the Anzac Centenary, Macquarie Regional Library has undertaken a project to identify men and women from Dubbo who served in the First World War and to create a list of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their service (and were either killed in action, died of wounds, or died of illness).

One of these soldiers, Private James Rhodes, a New Zealander, who had been working at the Court House Hotel in Dubbo before he enlisted, wrote a letter to Dr N.S. King in Dubbo, which gives ‘a few particulars of the Australians' baptism of fire on the Dardanelles’, was published in The Dubbo Liberal on 25 June, 1915 (p. 2). Further information is held at the Library for each of these soldiers, including : place of birth, place and date of enlistment, address on enrolment, rank, unit, fate, date of death, age at death, the names of local memorials and/or honour rolls where the soldier’s name is listed, the AWM Place of Association town, where buried and/or where name is on memorial, cemetery plot details, any details collected from the Australian War Memorial circulars, and any further research notes.
